It is hard to take as a believer and supporter of a free press that I now personally
know our very own community newspaper does not report the complete story. I have an
educated mind but for the life of me, I cannot fathom how a reporter for a newspaper
reports a story on a meeting he did not even attend. Then has the audacity to put it on
the front page of the newspaper and give it a quirky little title as if he was where the
event took place.
If a reporter is not at an event and then prints a story that leads his reader to believe
he was at the meeting, to me that is not reporting, that is deceiving the reader. If he
could not attend the event and followed up with a "phone interview" shouldn't the article
state just that.
For example, I was unable to attend the event but was able to get a comment over the
phone and it went like this........
That is a bit more up front and straightforward honest reporting don't you think? I do.
In fact, that is the type of news I want to read. The complete truthful story. Not one
buttered up and warmed up to make me think something happened, when in fact the
person telling me did not even witness or take part in such event. Such a scam and an
absolute shame.
The reason I am talking about this is because I spoke at the council meeting Monday
evening and had at least 15 to 20 people accompanying me there at this meeting. I got
up and spoke along with the people that supported the reason I was there. We actually
had a very productive cordial discussion with the council back and forth between
councilmen and citizens.
The topic was discussed for at least 15 minutes and yet the reporter that put the story
of the council meeting on the front page of the newspaper failed to even mention that I
was there, along with 15 to 20 other Dayton residents, some of who also stood up and
spoke before the council.
Do you know why he didn't mention me along with the other 15 to 20 residents?
Because he had no clue! He was not even there to report the story!
Instead, this reporter by the name of Max Hackett simply took the agenda, called city
hall the next day, and the bits and pieces he got from his phone call he twisted in to a
front page article. He wasn't even there folks! That's the Herald-News for you. They
report what they want, on who they want, and for reasons on their own political agenda.
How can I, as a person who has witnessed an outright public lie, believe anything this
newspaper prints about our community, especially on important topics that are important
to the constituents of Dayton. I suggest we all keep a closer eye on things for
ourselves, attend the council meetings, attend the county commission meetings, get out
there and VOTE. Because folks, you are not being given the complete and objective
story. You are getting the story the Herald-News for whatever their own reasons are,
wants you to read.
I should have believed Herald-News Publisher, Ed Emens when he himself told me,
"that's just the way we do things around here."
