A couple of months ago my dryer died. I know, it was a rather sad event but we
all knew it was coming. Our poor old faithful dryer struggled load after load trying
it's best to hang on for us to be there to dry my out dated, over-stretched
drawers just one more time... I'm humming that old song, "Precious Memories..."
Well since the death of my trusted dryer I have been putting off buying a new
replacement dryer because the old faithful washer is still going strong. I mean, I
really want a new dryer but I want a new dryer along with a new washer but hate
to give up my old friend, Mr. Washer.
Yesterday, I loaded a couple baskets of washed clothes in the car and off to the
laundromat I go to dry my clothes. As I drove down the road trying once again to
come to terms with the fact that a new year is upon us and that Mr. Washer may
soon have to join his dearly departed friend Mr. Dryer, I snapped from my
thought as the laundromat was just up ahead.
To my amazement the entire front section of the laundromat was full of vehicles
so I eased past them to pull into the bigger parking lot on the side only to find it
having five more vehicles parked there.
I got to thinking to myself that there is no way that I will be able to get a dryer with
all these customers piled in the laundromat. I went ahead and got out of my car
and did the old famous Rhea County "front" in acting like I was getting
something from the trunk of the car when I noticed something odd.
I noticed that 3 of the 5 vehicles parked beside me were each the same color, 2
mini vans and 1 SUV's. Each of these vehicles had Bledsoe County tags on
them. That got me even more curious. I casually walked toward the front door of
the laundromat and I saw 2 more mini vans of the exact same make and model as
the 3 on the side along with several other vehicles. Had these vehicles been
black I would have sworn the ATF, FBI, IRS, CIA, ICE, FIB, LIE or some other
group of initials that sound cool was in town.
As I looked inside the glass front windows I counted no less than 37 Mexicans
inside doing their laundry. Needless to say I said the heck with drying clothes
and left and went to Wal-Mart to buy some Chinese stuff. You know rumor has it
that if every American took off all their clothing that was made in China that 7 out
of 10 people would be naked. Wow, so much for good old America productivity.
Anyways, to make a long story short, I thought to myself along my route to
Wal-Mart about what I had seen. I thought in a way maybe I should invest in a
laundromat. Business must be good and if Mexicans are hauled from Bledsoe
County to Rhea County just to wash clothes then I needed to open a laundromat
over there in Bledsoe. Then it dawned on me. I had read a couple stories here at
RheaCountyNewspaper.com about how Bledsoe County was drying up, out of
water and how the Dayton Council is looking at ways to sell off what water we
have to them. Okydoky, that sure sounds like a decent business decision based
upon supply and demand but a municipality is NOT in the money making
business. Residents of a municipal corporation are not stockholders, they are
residents. There are no dividends to be paid to the city residents either.
In fact, it seems the other way around. Dayton City residents pay whatever it is
they all are told to pay just so they can live there. It sure seems to me that IF all
"30 something" of these Mexicans that I saw are not legal, then why are they
here in my city using my water and services? Why is that?
Another question is just how come nobody seems to care?
When June Griffin stole a Mexican flag from a store in her self described act of
patriotism, she not only single handedly caused the store she stole the flag from
to shut down but all the clusters of illegal Mexicans associated with the store
scampered off somewhere else. Wow, maybe June should be in charge of the
Border Patrol. After all, she was recently been appointed a Colonel in the
Alabama State Militia by the Governor.
In any event, I look at immigrants who are LEGAL CITIZENS as a welcome to our
economy. Most certainly people like farmers and obviously laundromat owners
profit greatly from Mexican cash.
However, if that Mexican cash is cash paid at a low "under the table" wage while
at the same time getting free food stamps, free medical, free school books, free
everything else that you and I can't never seem to get free, then I have a problem.
I look at it this way. If I were to wake up one morning and look out my window
and see five tents set up in my "fenced in" back yard with 47 men, women and
kids running all over the place I think I would figure, uh oh, these people have
jumped over my fence and are living on my property. I'm no lawyer but that sure
sounds like trespassing to me.
Funny thing, poor old Max Hackett goes to jail for being drunk and trespassing
while Mexicans can be drunk and trespassing upon an entire nation and we all
stand up and sing "Jesus loves the little children..."

Before I end this ramble, I cannot stress the fact enough that we all seem to have
become complacent, dependant and walk around looking up to the clouds while
all along events are occurring that will indeed change how we all live. Perhaps
the good thing is I am old enough, as well as other things, and that I may not be
alive to witness it. That may indeed be a blessing to not have to live to see such a
great country, such a great state right on down to my little piece of the world be
destroyed. So sad.
The sad part is our kids and grand kids will be forced to face and deal with what
we collectively are too afraid, or too damn ignorant to deal with ourselves.
